A Lesson From History

Mr President-Elect Trump,

Let her go. Do not seek to jail her. Nor humiliate her. Nor impoverish her. Pull her claws if you must, but let her go.

I don’t care if it is justice. Or the letter of the law. When it becomes too dangerous to lose elections, bad things happen to a civilization. If leaving office leads to imprisonment or humiliation one is tempted to stay in power. Marius and Sulla.

When Caesar was told he had lost his office he had a choice: Be sued into poverty, or fight a civil war. He cast the dice and took his army into Italy. He won the civil war and killed the Roman Republic. We must let losers go away gracefully.

And is is nice to start with magnanimity and grace.

Simple Thoughts

A simple opinion about a complex thing is wrong.

Or it is a great truth.
